My design for Elmer shows him with an all-over zebra pattern, and sunflowers on his head and feet, as well as a green tail with a sunflower on the end. The inspiration for this piece was the phrase in medicine “When you hear the sound of hooves, think horses, not zebras.” Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome – which I have – is represented by the zebra, as are various other rare health conditions, like neuroendocrine cancer, which my dad has suffered with for the last 10 years. As I also happen to suffer with endometriosis, I wanted to incorporate the colour yellow, and ended up choosing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.
Hollyann has always loved art, doing occasional commissions here and there for fun and a little bit of extra money. She left mainstream education back in 2017 due to bullying and health issues, however art has always remained a constant in her life. Hollyann has since returned to education back in September 2020 and is pursuing art, alongside gaining the qualifications she wasn’t able to while home-schooled. She thoroughly enjoys being able to explore different art techniques, mediums, and styles despite various medical diagnoses trying (and failing) to get in the way.
